What is Import?

According to the definition, all sales of goods and services with economic entities that have their permanent seat (residence) outside Germany. From the point of view of customs law, all imports into the customs territory of the EC (EU).

What value limits must be observed?

Regardless of the identity of the consignor and the consignee, all consignments of goods whose total value does not exceed 22 euros are exempt from import duties (Articles 23 and 24 of the Customs Exemption Regulation). This applies to customs and import VAT.

With a value between 22 euros and 150 euros, the shipments are duty-free, but not exempt from import VAT.

How do I register?

Generally, the application for import clearance has to be applied for at the customs office where the goods were presented. The application has to be submitted together with the customs declaration for the release of the goods for free circulation (Section 31 (2) number 1 AWV). The application can be submitted electronically or in paper form.
